With 2020 being an election year for the US, all eyes are pointed at Facebook and a big part of the reason why that is the case has to do with the fact that there were a lot of problems that occurred in the previous election many of which might have been directly caused by Facebook’s business practices. Hence, Mark Zuckerberg has decided to address the matter directly in an interview, voicing concerns about viral misinformation and making it so that people understand what Facebook is doing in order to prevent misinformation from getting out all in all.
Since the covid-19 pandemic is also having a huge impact on people, Zuckerberg is using this as an example of what Facebook is doing to prevent the spread of misinformation all in all. Essentially, Zuckerberg stated that anything that might cause immediate or grievous harm is removed without question, and more things are looked into in this regard than might be the case otherwise which is important because of the fact that misinformation has become quite a serious issue during the current period that we happen to be living in all in all.
However, with all of that having been said and out of the way, Zuckerberg also stated the importance of looking into things like freedom of speech should not be ignored. Essentially, Zuckerberg wants to make it so that as few infringements are made on freedom of speech as possible, something that has made him face quite a bit of criticism in the past especially when Facebook allowed politicians to post ads that featured blatant lies. In situations like this it becomes important to question the extent to which freedom of speech should be facilitated, especially in situations like where politicians are lying to people in order to get votes from them, something that could be considered a derailment of the political process in general
